Chinese hackers in cyber warfare with India
Government and private computer networks in India have been facing a deluge of attacks from Chinese hackers keen on dominating the electronic field.
The India Post reports of a sustained attack over the last 18 months that has seen an attempted break in to the country's ministry of external affairs, Indian websites defaced (143 in October) and various phishing scams directed at computer users in the country.
These have prompted national security fears among authorities in the country as the "Chinese are constantly scanning and mapping India's official networks".
The newspaper reports that despite the Chinese government's denials of state-controlled cyber snooping and hacking, doing it for the national cause is not frowned upon.
It lists the 1999 creation of Honker Union in China after the US bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, whose main purpose was to hack into government websites around the world under the banner of patriotism and nationalism, as an example.
Hackers are a major source of worry for governments worldwide, in June 2007, the Pentagon shut its computers for a week as a result of the exercise.
