China-Tibet issue 'a hook for malware'
Cybercriminals are using the China-Tibet debate as a hook to infect PCs with malware because it is such a public interest issue at present, it has been asserted.
Online information and news portal Virus Bulletin has claimed that the story is being used as a hook for a number of malware attacks because of the number of people interested in the situation.
It noted that both sides of the debate are being targeted by hackers, with malicious code being inserted into some Free Tibet websites and a pro-Tibet cartoon being emailed around in fact installing malware onto the recipient's machine.
Often, subjects of major public interest are used to spread malicious programs but sometimes they can be used to spread hoax threats as well.
Previously, a hoax email was sent to many people, warning of a fictitious 'Olympic Torch virus' which compromised PCs and then destroyed the contents of their hard drive.
