China hosts 70 per cent of spam domains
Around 70 per cent of internet domains used for the propagation of spam email messages since the start of 2009 are based in China.
The director of research in computer forensics at the University of Alabama in Birmingham Gary Warner claims that Chinese top-level domain names are the originators of large proportions of spam.
"I truly believe that the Chinese government would not willingly tolerate this horrible situation," Warner said in a blog entry.
"My only answer is that it must not have been properly brought to their attention so far," he added.
He claimed that international criminals were obviously taking advantage of China's poorly regulated internet infrastructure.
Warner claimed that the situation amounts to a spam crisis in the country.
Meanwhile, the amount of spam circulating the internet has continued to increase, with some 90 per cent of business email being from illegitimate sources, according to Syamntec an increase of 5.1 per cent in the past month.
