China delays internet filtering plans
The Chinese government has delayed plans to pre-install internet filtering software on all new computers, it has been reported.
According to the state media, computer manufacturers will need more time to launch the software, which is known as Green Dam Youth Escort.
Officials say that the new software is designed to shield young internet users from pornography and violence, however, the move has been widely criticised in the west.
Tests carried out on the Green Dam software outside China have found that it leaves computers open to attack from viruses, Trojans and malware.
Meanwhile, some states claim that the internet security package could break trade rules and interfere with people's rights.
Recently, Computer News claimed that internet filtering is a good way of reducing the number of phishing and spam attacks that make it through to people's email inboxes.
The news provider added that anti-virus software was vital to ensure internet security was not compromised.
