Chennai residents feel the brunt of hackers
Indian internet users are smarting from the havoc caused by a series of phishing scams believed to be the handiwork of Nigerian cyber crooks, reports say.
Chennai city residents are among those affected and the Central Crime Branch police in the city is investigating some 52 complaints from people who fell for the scams, according to The Hindu.
"The phishing emails were sent from browsing centres. We have decided to seek the help of Interpol to apprehend the suspects," admitted the commissioner of police.
"An intensive awareness campaign is being launched to educate internet users not to get cheated by phishing mails."
According to the newspaper, internet users in Chennai alone have lost Rs.75 lakh (£88,600) to the phishing emails sent by cyber crooks mostly based in Nigeria and Israel.
Online security experts advise internet users to avoid opening any unsolicited emails if they want to avoid being exposed to online threats.
