Campaign launched by Storm creators
Another spam campaign has been launched by the criminals behind the Storm worm as they seek to envelop more victims in their botnet, an expert has asserted.
Writing for VNUNet.com, sector commentator Shaun Nichols explained that the latest attempts by the cybercrooks to ensnare further victims are disguised as greetings cards and use subject lines like: "Your ecard joke is waiting."
On opening the mail, the recipient is offered a link which downloads an executable file filled with the Storm malware, he continued.
"Infected machines are then connected to a customised peer-to-peer network which is used to control the botnet and install new versions of the worm," Mr Nichols warned.
A botnet refers to a collection of machines controlled remotely by a hacker, sometimes called zombie machines.
Computers are usually recruited into such networks through malware such as worms, Trojans and viruses.
They can then be used by the originator to conduct further criminal activity, such as spreading further malware and distributing spam.
