Businesses advised to protect web servers
More than half of the world's websites could be operating in a way that is likely to open back doors to cyber crooks cause havoc with online threats, it has been reported.
This is because 50.4 percent of websites operate on Linux-based servers according to Netcraft and their administrators are more lax about online security compared to their windows based counterparts, reports Computer Weekly.
The website states the problem is even bigger as most of the administrators also believe anti-virus software is unnecessary because Linux-based servers are more secure if correctly configured.
Skills also play a role in the situation as most of the administrators tend to be more qualified in Windows operations than Linux.
Organisations are advised to not only concentrate on protecting their desktop computers but also perform some sort of malware scanning on web servers.
"While the software would not block all the threats, it can at least alert administrators that the server is being targeted," the website cautioned.
