Britons 'responsible for own online security'
Users must protect their online privacy themselves and not rely on companies or governments to do so for them, an expert has remarked.
Tim Gibbon, co-founder and editor at the Social Media Portal, urged people to be cautious when revealing information online and to behave sensibly when revealing information.
He said that there will be a rise in the number of crooks "looking to manipulate both the surge of users in social networks and what information can potentially be found on them, especially if users are not taking adequate measures to protect their personal details".
Ultimately, though, it is down to the individual to protect themselves from online threats such as fraudsters and to exercise commonsense, Mr Gibbon added.
A recent investigation by the BBC revealed that cybercriminals were using fake Facebook applications to steal sensitive information from victims.
When users downloaded the widget, they gave the creator their personal details without meaning to.
