British consumers wary of ID theft
Identity theft is increasingly becoming a big concern to many British consumers, a survey from American Express has revealed.
According to the study, which looked into Britons' top safety concerns, British people are more wary of ID theft than street crime or terrorism.
Some 43 per cent of those polled ranked it top ahead of being mugged or attacked and burglary which both got 32 per cent.
Chris Rolland, head of American Express insurance services said: "As fast-paced working life drives more people to rely on technology in the way they manage their lives, so the safety landscape is changing and ID theft is becoming a bigger issue year on year."
According to the Cabinet Office, ID theft is Britain's fastest-growing white-collar crime and costs the country at least £1.3 billion a year.
People concerned about the growing trend have been advised to carry out checks of their credit files to confirm no suspicious entries have been made.
