Britain hit by phishing attacks
The UK is being hit by a rising number of phishing attacks, a new report has warned.
Apacs, the UK payments association, has published figures which show there were 10,000 reported phishing incidents in the first three months of the year.
This is an increase of 200 per cent on the same period in 2007.
Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs, warned that the fraudsters behind such scams are developing increasingly sophisticated messages as they attempt to coerce consumers into parting with sensitive information.
"Just remember that your bank will never send you emails asking you to disclose Pin numbers, login details or complete passwords - if you receive an email of this nature you should delete it," she added.
Earlier this year, insurance provider Direct Line asserted that identity theft costs the UK £1.7 billion a year and urged Britons never to release personal details in response to emails or phonecalls.
