Beware of tragedy spammers
PC security software manufacturer Symantec Corporation has warned of a new brand of spammers exploiting current environmental disasters, reports The Star Online.
According to the company the recent wave of natural disasters like the China earthquake and Myanmar cyclone have spurred an increase in email scams asking computer users for donations.
Symantec's Malaysia general manager C.M. Woon, said: "By adapting their tactics to fit current trends, spammers have been able to maximise the effectiveness of their attacks."
He said the spammers were also "aiming to capitalise on the harsh economic situation and prey on those in our society facing financial pressures".
And users have been warned to be especially vigilant when using the 'I'm feeling lucky' button on search engine giant Google as the spammers have been using it to redirect users to spam sites.
An Indian expert recently warned that ignorance of online threats could be catastrophic for computer users. However with the proper internet security and regular updates to the security software, online threats and spamware can be avoided.
