Beware of internet-enabled phones, experts warn
Internet security experts have issued warnings urging consumers to be wary of internet enabled phones, reports the Times of India.
According to the experts, devices such as Blackberry, Windows Mobile, iPhone and Symbian phones have gaping security weaknesses, which hackers could easily exploit.
Anand Naik, director, Symantec India, said: "Smart phones are easy targets for hackers. And studies show the threat is doubling every six months in India."
Some 200 mobile viruses are said to be in circulation in the US with more being released on a daily basis, according to US-based research firm, TowerGroup.
Through the viruses and spyware codes, the hackers can commandeer the devices to do anything they wish including recording conversations or discreetly taking photos.
Breaches are being enabled by hackers sending spyware or snoopware through SMS/MMS or GPRS, email or Bluetooth, which can be disguised as being from the service provider.
"The moment you click on it the spyware/virus gets activated. It starts working quietly and the user has no clue that someone is tapping everything he does," said Rajat Khare, CEO, Appin Group.
