Bank websites have flaws, research states

A report has revealed that design flaws in many banking websites leave innocent consumers exposed to the risk of online threats posed by hackers, according to the IDG News Service.

According to the report based on a University of Michigan study, more than 75 per cent of some 214 banking websites studied had at least one design blemish that could pose online security issues.

The report revealed that almost half of all banks did not have a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), which makes it easy for hackers to reroute data to their own PCs, or to intercept the data before allowing it to reach the bank's servers.

The report cautioned against emailing passwords and statements and revealed 28 per cent lacked password guidelines or allowed consumers to use weak passwords.

The study, whose partial findings were released on Tuesday July 22nd will be fully unveiled this Friday July 25th at the Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
