One of the ways in which a virus can damage a home PC is by opening a so-called back door in the machine, allowing someone else to use it, an expert has explained.
Computer technician Dan Blanchard made his comments to First Coast News amid concerns over viruses disguising themselves as virtual postcards sent by family members.
The news resource warned that the virus spreads by encouraging recipients to click on a link.
However, Mr Blanchard warned that those who do so will most likely be offered an install option and must not be tempted to click "run" as this could cause it to send itself to everyone in their address book.
The best thing to do is delete the message from both the email and the deleted file, he urged.
It is vital that browsers protect themselves from both email virus threats and other internet security hazards.
Venturing online without protection against malware such as viruses and worms can cause a machine to become compromised within just a few minutes.
