Awareness of threats 'prompts software take-up'

More than 90 per cent of Britons with their own computers now use anti-virus software, suggesting a greater awareness of online threats, an expert has asserted.

Tony Neate, managing director of the Get Safe Online initiative - a joint project between the UK government and the Serious Organised Crime Agency, said people are becoming increasingly conscious of the risks posed by the internet.

Among small businesses there is an even greater awareness of the security issues which threaten their computers, he continued.

However, he warned that some people are failing to protect their PCs by not using anti-spyware software and urged them to ensure their machines were protected from such programs.

"Lots of the companies are now boxing them together so that you're protected. If you're only buying anti-virus software it's not good enough," Mr Neate added.

Earlier this month, the BBC reported that security firms believe the number of malicious programs has never been as high as it is currently.
