'Avoid opening' unknown files
In the interests of computer protection, internet users should avoid opening any files which are attached to an email sent by an unknown source, it has been advised.
According to online blog Lina, it is "better to be safe than sorry", as some viruses can replicate themselves and spread via email.
Web surfers are also advised to update their anti-virus software on a regular basis.
The blog entry states: "Over 500 viruses are discovered each month, so you'll want to be protected."
Meanwhile, people are also advised to back up their files and store them in a location that is not on their computer so that those who are unlucky enough to experience a breach of their PC's security do not lose important documents.
In other online security news, the Australian Federal Police last year advised internet users to take steps to safeguard their personal information from potential threats by being alert to hoax emails.
