Author 'unwitting reason for hacked PCs'
An author has confessed that he is unsure how to prevent hackers from using a lapsed domain of his to spread malware about the internet.
Writer John Skoyles emailed the Independent's Cyberclinic blog, admitting that a domain he used to own to promote a publication no longer belonged to him but was being used to target people with spyware "and worse".
Blogger Rhodri Marsden explained that a lapsed domain name will often "be snapped up by someone who either wants to make a buck trying to resell it, or will use it to install malware on the computers connecting to the old site".
Recently, Google warned that as many as one in ten websites could be being used to upload malware such as Trojans onto an unwitting user's PC.
Such malicious programs, the search engine giant continued, can be used to steal sensitive information such as banking passwords.
