Australian ISPs come together to create E-security guidelines

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Australia are joining forces to come up with a new code of practice for computer protection.

With the country currently marking its own National E-Security Awareness Week, representatives from the main ISPs met in Sydney to discuss the possibility of drawing up a new set of guidelines aimed at offering both businesses and individual users greater levels of protection from online criminals.

Speaking at a special event in the city, Senator Stephen Conroy, who serves as the minister for broadband, communications and the digital economy, explained that this latest initiative marks an "important step" towards beefing up security against hackers and fraudsters.

"Increasingly sophisticated internet-based attacks can leave small businesses and individuals vulnerable to financial theft or loss of personal information," he said.

"ISPs sit at the gateway to the internet. They are uniquely placed to help create a security culture among Australian internet users by ensuring their customers are aware of the simple things they can do to protect themselves online."

Last month, the senator came under criticism for his decision to backtrack on earlier pledges to censor the internet, with campaigners having called for illegal content to be blocked by compulsory software.
