Australia hits back at cybercrime with new unit
Australia is fighting back against the online threat of cybercrime with its new Internet Commerce Security Laboratory, it has been reported.
The University of Ballarat, the Victorian government, IBM Australia and the Westpac Banking Corporation have all committed to the venture, Australian newspaper the Courier noted.
It has been created in order to work against cybercrime and will target gangs of online criminals.
The online threats of identity theft, viruses, malware, worms and spyware will all be studied by the new organisation.
Information and communication technology minister Theo Theophanous told the newspaper the Internet Commerce Security Laboratory will tackle some of the online security issues which "plague" both business and individuals.
"Research from a Newspoll survey released this month show the top two issues of concern faced by Australians are the theft or misuse of personal identity and credit and debit card fraud," he added.
Recently, James McCormack, the director of the Australian High Tech Crime Centre, told Computer World that malware is the biggest web-based threat Australia faces.
