Aussies being targeted by cyber crooks
Australian online shoppers are being targeted by a phishing scam exploiting Trading Post, a competitor to internet auction site eBay, an online security expert has warned.
Phishing emails, which come with a link, warn users that their accounts with the organisation have expired and must be renewed online, bad news for last-minute shoppers, according to Sophos.
"But if you click on the link it doesn't take you to the real Australian Trading Post site, but a clone which asks for your username and password," warns the firm's senior technology consultant Graham Cluley.
"The bogus site even goes as far as to reproduce Trading Post's warning that the company will never send you an email asking you to sign in from a link inside the email - it's a shame more people don't follow this very sound advice!"
According to the internet security expert, the fake pages were being distributed by a baseball fan's website that had been compromised to host the phishing content.
However, the hacked site has been blocked by the hosting ISP and users are being warned of the underlying threat.
