Atlanta firm faults free proxy server Tor

Hackers can exploit free open resource proxy server Tor to steal passwords from end users as well as other data used in phishing scams, a private detective based in Atlanta has claimed.

The resource, which is sometimes used to give anonymity by preventing traffic analysis by the likes of Google is said to be "vastly insecure".

Eagle Investigative Services made the claim after discovering a crook had compromised the online security of a Google Adwords programme for the company's online marketing campaign.

According to the firm's spokesperson Malcolm Lambe the crooks sneaked in through a flaw that had been brought to light recently during a Black Hat Conference in Washington earlier this year.

Following the discovery, the company deleted the programme and changed all its passwords and log in details.

Online security experts recommend not only having proper internet security software in place, but also regularly monitoring systems in order to see if there is anything unusual such as unauthorised entry.
