'Astounding' that computers still lack protection
An IT expert has spoken of her surprise when a friend showed her their computer and she discovered it had no protection installed to safeguard it against malware.
Computing columnist Nancy Roberts commented in an article for News10Now that she felt "astounded" there are still people who do not have a firewall or anti-virus software on their machine.
She noted that being online for even a "few moments" without a firewall can be dangerous.
"Unprotected computers get infected, infected computers spread viruses and viruses are a danger at worst, an annoyance at best to all of us," asserted Ms Roberts.
She urged users to run anti-spyware programmes on their machines, to install a firewall and to buy and run good anti-virus software.
Last year, Rich Skrenta, widely credited as being the first person to loose a computer virus 25 years ago, told the Associated Press it had begun as a "dumb little practical joke".
However, the news provider reported that there are now at least hundreds of thousands of viruses and possibly more than one million.
