Arguments over culpability for identity theft

Internet users are divided as to whether or not banks should refuse to refund clients who have lost money as a result of a phishing scam or other online threats, a new report has revealed.

Online resource Virus Bulletin conducted the research among its readers after the British Bankers' Association edited its banking code.

The changes mean that internet bankers who were robbed because they failed to install anti-virus or anti-spyware software on their machines will not be refunded by banks.

Responding to the survey, one home user told Virus Bulletin: "Anyone using a computer has to realise that it is like the Wild West: using online banking without adequate protection almost guarantees 24-hour assaults."

However, many other respondents expressed concern that victims of fraud would assume they are responsible for losses without asking their bank if that is the case.

Virus Bulletin reported that one person remarked that many people using the internet do not understand what a virus or Trojan is.
