Apple urges installation of security software
Apple has quietly rubbished the long held notion that its operating system is immune to internet security issues and other online threats after recommending the installation of internet security software.
A recommendation was posted on its website last month advising people using the operating system to install "multiple" antivirus programmes in order to make it difficult for hackers to break through.
"Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult," said the recommendation.
It is believed that the recommendation may be due to the fact that Apple is steadily gaining market share and this may prompt cyber crooks and malicious programme writers to concentrate their efforts on it.
Most internet security vendors do not have as many security programmes for Apple systems as they do for PCs due to greater demand and more online threats targeting the latter.
