Anti-virus software 'vital'

Updated anti-virus software and programmes for getting ride of spyware are vital when ridding a computer of malware, an expert has commented.

Richard Lesniak, director of University at Buffalo's Computing and Information Technology Help Desk made his comments to campus newspaper the Spectrum following a virus outbreak hitting students.

He warned that the virus in question is "very dangerous" because it is hard to remove from a machine once it is infected.

Although some malware attempts to avoid anti-virus software, it is critical students keep their computer protection up to date, Dr Lesniak continued.

He explained that an online virus can be compared to a human bug and encouraged people with infected machines to seek help from a competent source.

A virus will often seek to infect a user's family and associates by accessing their email contacts or computers connected through a network.

They can use the victim's computer to send spamming emails, attack other machines or websites and sometimes allow hackers access to personal files.
