Anti-virus software 'simplest solution'
The simplest way to prevent a malware infection is to install legitimate anti-virus software onto a PC, a commentator has remarked.
Matt Gundesen, writing for the New York City Watch blog, suggested that viruses are dangerous and can cause data loss.
However, he explained, people who take sensible precautions can protect their machines from the online threat of malware.
Installing anti-virus software is one of the easiest ways to protect a machine, Mr Gundesen continued.
"The anti-virus program is designed to look out for any kind of activity that could be seen as similar to a virus attack or infestation and it automatically stops it," he added.
As well as causing damage to the victim's own PC, some commentators warn that malware can affect their family and friends' computers.
Once a machine is compromised, the virus will often access the victim's address book and email itself to their acquaintance, as well as use the machine to spread spam.
