Anti-virus 'necessary not optional'
Anti-virus software is not a choice, it is a necessity for anyone using their machine to browse the internet, an expert has asserted.
Teacher and industry commentator Christopher Dawson made his comments in a blog post hosted by the ZDNet resource.
He explained that even so-called "safe surfers" must be wary of malware such as viruses and Trojans, despite mainly using the web to visit sites such as eBay.
"The problem is not the users in this case. Rather, it's simply the sheer volume of malware floating around for Windows XP," Mr Dawson continued.
It no longer matters whether the user is a "teenage boy with unfettered broadband access" or a teacher occasionally visiting trusted sites, the internet can be a dangerously malware-ridden place, he concluded.
One of the dangers of online threats is that malicious programs can send themselves to a person's family and friends by forwarding itself using their address book.
