Anti-phishing organisation gets tough on phishers

Cyber crooks may soon find it difficult to set up rogue websites to be used for phishing following the publication of a best practices guide for registrars.

The Anti Phishing Working Group is behind the publication of the guide, which comes in the wake of increasingly sophisticated and spirited efforts from crooks to expose internet users to online threats on rogue sites.

"Phishing is a security risk to consumers; it hurts consumer confidence in the internet and damages the reputation of the domain registration system," noted the report's contributors.

"Protecting against phishing protects consumers, protects the security of the internet, and reduces financial loss to the registrar, registry, and ISP."

One way of doing this, the report recommends, is by suspending domains that are suspected of being linked to phishing campaigns and identifying and prosecuting the people behind them.

Key global registrars including Go Daddy and the Icann Registrar Constituency contributed to the report.
