Antimalware software change 'could slash code sizes by 70 per cent'
Changing to cloud-based security could reduce the size of software product codes by up to 70 per cent, Trend Micro says.
Traditional downloading of virus-pattern files is growing increasingly unreliable as it requires signature-based pattern matching of viruses that cannot deal with the millions of new viruses discovered annually.
In a new strategy called the Smart Protection Network, virus patterns will be moved to the internet, a change which Trend Micro chief executive Eva Chen says "is changing our product architecture and how we manage it".
"We are using cloud computing because when you have a humungous amount of data and you have to search it quickly, it's like an ocean," she said.
The first versions of Trend Micro's Smart Protection Network are expected by the end of the year.
Trend Micro has also revealed it is producing a version of its InterScan Web Security and Messaging Security products that is compatible with VMware's ESX virtual-machine platform, but pricing is yet to be announced.
