Always-on connections 'raise risk of malware'

The increasing prevalence of permanently active broadband connections is putting users at greater risk from malware, it has been claimed.

A post on the Streamyx Streamyx blog notes that many home computers now connect to the internet as soon as they are switched on.

This means their total time connected is significantly greater than was previously the case, the blog observes.

Malware is identified in the article as one of the two main ways in which a hacker can compromise an individual's system.

Such malicious software is given as the most likely way in which attacks can originate from within the machine, rather than from external sources such as hacking into an open port.

The blog stresses that readers should not be "fearful of the internet" but that preparations should be made to prevent such an attack from being successful.

A report in online resource ZDNet recently noted that systems are coming under more frequent attack.

The news provider recommended implementing security solutions at the perimeter of a home or office network to prevent malware from entering the network.
