60,000 exposed to ID theft following hack
Close to 60,000 people in the US have been exposed to online threats and the possibility of ID theft after it emerged that a cyber crook managed to hack into a company they worked for.
The revelation emerged after a routine check by the IT department at Arizona's Luxottica Retail revealed that a hacker had managed to compromise their systems and stolen data, according to the Inquirer.
Names, addresses and social security numbers of some 59,000 former employees of the company were reportedly stolen by the hacker, who police managed to trace through an IP address.
It emerged the hacker was Molly Burns, a 30-year-old woman with a string of convictions including theft, forgery and drug charges wanted in three different police departments in Arizona, the website states.
The company has reportedly sent out letters to all its former employees alerting them about the breach.
Identify Theft, a multi-sector government supported organisation in the UK states that personal information and one's identity are increasingly valuable to cyber crooks, who can use the information to open bank accounts and get credit cards.
