1,000s of websites 'vulnerable to attack'

More than 1,000 web domains have been compromised this month by a new round of malicious web attacks, an internet security firm has warned.

According to Finjan, which develops secure web gateways, the new toolkit being used by hackers is called Asprox. Although it is not new – it first came to prominence in 2007 – the malware has proved successful at exploiting websites with the extension .asp.

FInjan explained that the toolkit launches SQL injection attacks against these web domains in an extremely efficient way that allows it to infect a large number of PCs connected to the internet.

Writing on the company's blog, Yuval Ben-Itzhak, chief technical officer of Finjan, warned: "Since the list of these malware serving domains increases every day, we believe this is just the tip of the iceberg for the scope and impact of this attack."

"Among the compromised websites we found were those of respectable organisations, governmental institutes, healthcare organisations, as well as high-ranked websites."

In other internet security news, messaging firm Cloudmark has warned that spammers are using increasingly innovative ways to side-step security systems and email filters. The company estimated that over 85 per cent of all UK email traffic is now spam.
