Manage Attachment Security in Outlook (All Windows) Popular

New security measures that improve the dialog box warnings for attachments were included in Microsoft Outlook beginning with Outlook 2000 (SR-1). The file extensions that trigger the more secure warnings can be managed through the registry.

Open your registry and find the key below, if the 'Security' sub-key does not already exist then create it.

Create two new string values, or modify the existing values, called "AddWarningFileTypes" and "RemoveWarningFileTypes".

To include additional file extensions to receive the warning, add the extensions, seperated by a semicolon, to the "AddWarningFileTypes" value. In our example, to add Word and Excel documents to this list you would set the value to equal "DOC;XLS".

Removing warnings is the same but in reverse, for example, to remove the warning for registry files and VBScript files your would set the "RemoveWarningFileTypes" value to equal "REG;VBS".

Restart Outlook for the changes to take effect.

Note: Do not include the leading period (".") in the front of the extension, only include the alphanumeric characters.
