Default Kernel Compatibility + the SD5 GUI won't close

I have two problems with SD 5.0.1.205 (and all previous versions of SD5).

The first and most important is Kernel Compatibility. When this is enabled, on system startup, I am presented with a message box. The title bar states "swdsvc.exe - Application Error". The message states - "The exception unknown software exception occurred - the application at location 0x7c59bcb1". I use AVG Free version 7.5 (completely enabled) and Agnitum Outpost firewall ver. 4.0.1007.7323 (591) with realtime spyware protection enabled. Do I need kernel compatibility mode with these?

The other issue is that the SD5 GUI won't close without a struggle (about 20 clicks needed to dismiss the error message boxes that appear on attempting to close the GUI). This is a considerable nuisance but it does not appear to affect SD5 functionally.

These are the two reasons why I have not moved up to SD5 on my Win2K(SP4) system.

you could try it without quite safely, if it doesn't crash then leave it off an see if it works

Do you get these errors when the kernel compatibility mode is disabled? Use whichever mode keeps the errors away, use that mode.

You can also try to temporarily disable the Firewall to see if there are conflicts with the 2. Maybe provide a screenshot of the error messages for PC Tools to analyze.

Cheers,
Chippa

I have what appears to be the same problem when I try to close SD5 - an error box which requires multiple rapid clicks to close it. PC Tools have had a copy of the error message for some weeks without a solution.

I use Bit Defender 10, though, and start up is not a problem.

Probably best to wait for the new version and see if these errors occur.

Hi Guys,

From what I've heard from support, it should be released sometime this week. Its not 100% definite yet... so don't shoot the messenger if there is a slight setback lol . I guess the moderators will update this info once the decision has been made.

Cheers,
Chippa

I am beginning to lose belief that SD5 will ever work satisfactorily on my three machines. The GUI closure problem has persisted over many releases of SD5 and remains unsolved. I can understand that the kernel compatibility feature might be a hard nut to crack but am surprised that the GUI closure issue cannot be sorted. PC Tools acknowledged the behaviour.

PC Tools make kernel compatibility sound like an essential feature but do not explain how a user would recognise a situation which made it necessary to enable kernel compatibility.

I am reconciled to using SD4.1 for the foreseeable future as it works well with the other layers of defence which I deploy. I particularly value the keylogger prevention feature, which really works. I would have thought that PC Tools could maintain a malware signature database for both SD4.1 and SD5 by using software to translate the SD5 signatures into SD4.1 form for downloading by SD4.1 customers.

It seems to me that the sheer complexity of all these security systems created by so many reputable manufacturers is tending to become self-defeating as there is an ever increasing tendency to software conflicts between them. It seems to be becoming a choice of whether to hobble your system with malware or securityware.

PC Tools, please note that I could be persuaded to migrate from Agnitum Outpost if your firewall had DNS caching included. The Outpost feature is far less likely to be attacked than the Microsoft DNS cache, is easier to manage and configure and possesses defence against malformed DNS requests.
