Default Problems with 4.1 exiting itself

I have stuck with SD version 4.1 as version 5 has so many problems but now this version is behaving badly.

Problem 1:
SD and IE7 are running together happily and then when I open a new tab in IE, SD must exit itself because it gives me a message to say it is not running and would I like to start it.

Message shown below:

I then have to restart SD all over again.

Problem 2: Windows reports that SD has experienced a problem and must shut it down.

Problem 3: Windows reports that IE has experienced a problem and must shut it down.

Problem 4: Windows reports that Explorer has experienced a problem and must shut it down.

Problem 5: A webpage open in one of the tabs in IE stops working and I can't even close the tab. The only solution is to shut down IE using CTRL ALT DEL
and restart it. Sometimes it even requires a reboot to fix it.

Problem 1 is happening a lot and has been for the last few months. Problems 2 to 5 happen less frequently but enough to cause aggravation. I temporarily uninstalled SD to see if that was the cause of these problems and guess what - no freezes or shut downs when SD was no longer installed. I have reinstalled it and I am back to having problems again. So SD is definitely the culprit...

Has anyone else had these problems? And if you're reading this PCTools - please hurry up and get SD sorted out as I am a loyal user who is very close to ditching your product for good and asking for a refund of my subscription....

Hi cyber_spud,

Could you please tick the checkbox for "Remember my answer" and click on 'No'. Check if the issue still occurs.

We have had no reports on the following issue and we'll need to investigate this further. If we require further info, I'll let you know.

I am having the same problem with SD 4.1 and IE. I only use IE when I go to a web site that "requires" it. Otherwise, I only use Firefox. Using IE causes these shutdown/restart messages in SD 4.1 for me as well.

I had similar problems on V5 running IE7 and multiple tabs. Since uppgrading my RAM to 512 I may normally be able to kep 4 tabs open at the same time, before 1 - sometimes 2 before 'internet explorer encountered a problem'. Disabling 'on guards' eased the situation, upgrading RAM 'solved' the problem. Running in Firefox was never a problem. I never experienced similar with IE6 and multiple windows. It might be the 'tabs' in IE7 that causes it. Disabling the tabs in IE7 also seemed to reduce the problem.

For those experiencing issues with SDv4.1 and IE, could you please provide screenshots of any error messages? what operating system are you currently running? security programs? Any additional info to allow us to recreate this issue would assist us further in our investigation.

Exclamation SDv$.1

Today at11.05Am another episode of SDv4.1 closing down. The icon was on the taskbar and immediately the mouse cursor was placed on the icon it disappeared requiring a re-loading of the database. No warnings, no messages. This is becoming a frequent issue. No other programmes were running not even IEv6. Smart Update this morning with no problems.

same as cubfox. no error message displayed. SD just disappeared from the tray. When i go to settings and see if there is anything logged, nothing there. I went to Event Manager and see if there are anything out of the ordinary there, nothing there as well.

Also after updating the database to version 3.07790 and it still quits on its own, i removed SD and reinstalled it. However, no luck. I might go back to version 4.0.

Hi
Please note that version 4.0 will update to 4.1 when you do smart updates.

I have tried your suggestion AChen - ticking the checkbox for "Remember my answer" and clicking on 'No' but the issue still occurs. Not sure if this is connected but I have noticed that in the OnGuard tool "popup blocker", clicking on "On" doesn't do anything - shouldn't this toggle the settings between on/off like the other tools?

Re other security software - I am using AVG free but this never caused this issue when used with SD 3.5 or SD 4.0 and when I used SD 4.1 without AVG, I still had the problem - so I don't think that is the culprit. Re RAM as suggested by another user - I have 1GB installed so I would expect that to be enough.

Any ideas how to get this sorted - or is V5 stable enough for me to dare to use???

Well, I'd say go for V5! It seems to be running pretty well and giving us all the warm fuzzies. Let's hope it stays that way
