Spyware Doctor: Unsafe at any Speed
Computer Shopper UK
August 2007 Issue
Front Page Feature
Anti-Spyware EXPOSED
Big names miss 59% of infections
"This was one of the least effective tools in this group in terms of discovering spyware before it has a chance to interact with the system."
"Spyware Doctor is poor value"
Eddie
It would not be fair to mention the competition by name, but there are more commendable solutions to the Spyware nuisance.

Posts like this can be downright scary. I am relatively new at this and orginally chose PC Tools because of it's rave reviews in PC World, CNET, Spyware Warrior etc. I had spysweeper but got an infection last June that it would not remove. Bought SD and it worked beautifully. I've not picked up anything since then either. I know people have had app problems with SD5. That aside, how is one to know how good a job a security app is really doing? As an old Jaws fan...is it safe to go back into the water?
What are some of the reputable independent lab accreditations we should look for? I kind of depend on this forum and some of the regulars who know more than I do to give things the thumbs up. Again, not talking about application software problems but once those are resolved is this a solid security package? I have thought that PC Tools was one of the more reputable companies.
Any thoughts?

This form of "paranoia" can happen with any security program. Is it working? Did it catch everything? How do I know? Well, you don't. If a program says your system is clean but it isn't you're running on blind faith. That's especially true of free anti-spyware programs. They just don't cut it with today's sophisticated malware.
No program, no matter how good it is, is going to catch everything nor please everyone with its effectiveness or features. The only thing you can do is run more than one program and hope they catch each others "blind spots".

First, the article may be false, he may lie.
Second, Spyware Doctor is specialized to remove spyware, right?
So it's hard to detect and remove all kind of malware.
Another example is Norton Antivirus, it's great against viruses, but poor against all types of malware.

12 months ago V4 was highly rated by Computer Shopper, one of the most effective antispyware programmes they had tested - why should they now lie about V5
The test was the programme's ability to detect and remove spyware not malware.
