Default Through with PC Tools and Sypware Dr

"The Guards to be removed by default are “Email Guard” and “Site Guard”. We have decided these tools will be offered as separate downloads, so those people that want the extra protection can choose to install them, rather than them being in the default installation. The separate downloads are currently being tested and built and will be made available online in due course, along with some other add-ons to be released for Spyware Doctor."

In program manager speak, this means these two modules are seriously flawed, we can't get it right, and we don't want to admit it.

Since the download of 5.0, I've experienced a lot of the problems everyone else has: Outlook locks up, SD seems to lock up, the system icon won't respond, a pop up menu floats to the top of my desktop, won't go away, and covers my other applications, and worst of all, last night the system tray icon said scanning (it wasn't), I couldn't start or stop the program, but when I looked this morning SD was disabled without my intent or knowledge.

Right after completing the installation, I sent an e-mail to tech support. WRT the pop-up problem I got an insulting one-liner to just right click on the system tray icon to manage the app, at the time tech support had to know that there was a problem with the system tray icon and could have been more forthright.

Then I see the quote above on the forums this morning.

(1) I'm just not going to trust a company that pushes out a major release with this many mission critical bugs to protect my PC.

(2) I'm typically a loyal customer. I've worked for a S/W company, and I understand bugs can happen. But so many major bugs, and a terrible attitude about them. Never again.

(3) A major problem with changing any S/W is the time it takes. But the investment in time cannot be worse then my experience and wasted time over the last few days, or the sadly lacking response from PC Tools.

(4) Oh yes, the post about the updated release says a complete revamping after 18 hard months. Great. If you put out a package with this many serious bugs we can see, WHAT'S GOING ON UNDER THE HOOD THAT WE CAN'T SEE! I'm just not going to trust PC Tools any longer, and IMHO with spy ware/virus protection, if you can't trust your vendor it's not that you have nothing, you actually have less than nothing.

Thumbs down Going back to ver 4 until ver 5 is fixed.

I have tried all ver 5 of spyware doctor. None work with my computer. I am goin to go back to ver 4 which I am told will work with Vista, how be it, limited support. If this work I will wait to see if the new ver 5 works. I don't like being used to test new software, even though they tell us it will work. I wonder just how much the test this on vista machines, or which build?

Hello Mandysdad,

Could you try the upgrade of Spyware Doctor 5 located in http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/upgrade/ and see whether it solves your problem.

If you still experiencing problems, uninstall Spyware Doctor 5 and install Spyware Doctor 4.

Cheers,

Customer Support Team

Tried that too. Still did not work. Spyware doctor would start, freeze then nothing.
