Frankly I can't think of too many things, aside from background files and programs, that do load or are running at the welcome screen, even anti-virus. Since the taskbar icon isn't present when Windows opens up I don't think it's running yet.

I've reverted back to v4.x, as I've had my fill of beta testing a commercial product for free...
As for running as a service, Sunbelt's Counterspy loads at the welcome screen to provide protection at that point, which is why I asked about SD.

You may be right about that. I just don't think it's doing any "protecting", as he was concerned with, during the welcome screen. It may be in the process of loading but as to actually being active I don't know.
