SDv5.174 and PCTools AntiVirus ...
First thing - can you guys PLEASE differentiate between builds being offered by adding the version number to the web-site AND/OR the file! Good grief!!
Second thing - Ok, based on favorable reports I'm seeing on build 174, despite deciding to not attempt using SD again (ever) due to "system molestation" from beta garbage released as non-beta, I'll re-bite .. or maybe just nibble.
I need to get this off my chest first though: I did NOT purchase v4, back when, looking for anti-virus protection!! I stand amazed reading messages here from people crowing about your av component now functioning for them. Great. When your av goes up against and offers comparable protection to Avira, Kaspersky and NOD32 .. I'll raise an eyebrow. What I need to determine, prior to installing this file I just downloaded from your v174 post link, is:
* Does this file contain the av component? and, if so, can you provide me a link to any v5.174 build not containing it?
* Having obtained an av free version, will the av component then reach through the program update, grabbing me by the throat, causing trouble with my existing av of choice? or, do I have the ability to DENY it's download?
Sincerely

Hi
I believe this is the link to the SDv5 standalone version www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download/
> During the installation uncheck the box for automatically install updates
> Do a manual smart update and uncheck any reference to the AV
> Go to Settings > General > uncheck "Display Antivirus information on Status page"
If the AV is still trying to come through, you can PM your registration code to AChen who can then disable this feature of your future smartupdates
Hope this sorts things out

thanks for info. If it works its a one time thing, but still pm achen for those of us who have multiple separate machines, or for that matter, for the hundreds who might not want an as yet unmproved AV, seems very cumbersome. Won't it be simpler simply to have a spydoctor only download

Hi
Unfortunately, if at any point you used the AV plugin it is then attached to your subsrciption details so will always prompt to download. By PM AChen you can have this removed from your subscription.

Hi. Appreciate the info you provided in response to this thread. I obtained what turned out to be an av-free version - SURPRISE!-, as every download offered by them, from what they were officially calling betas to the latest 174 build, appears to have the same file-name. Absolutely amazing.
Anyway, I've installed b174 and ... it's apparently working!! Had an initial issue with scan lockups requiring a couple of hard resets ... traced the problem to the SD hosts file scanner and Avira's premium suite. AntiVir was controlling (had locked) the hosts file. Telling SD to NOT mess with the hosts file allowed it to scan successfully. Update/net connections are good, no indication of sluggishness. Resources used by SD are very acceptable. Load speed for v5 compared to v4 a significant improvement. Browsing with IE6, Avant and Opera are not impacted negatively. SDv5.174 is currently running without difficulty along with: Avira's suite, SuperAntiSpyware Pro and BoClean .. all resident.
One last thing. Based on what you've said in this quote, I shouldn't have to worry about SD ever attempting to download any av component, or update, as I've never downloaded/installed same. I'm not at my machine right now and cannot remember the name of an update I've not allowed to install. The name led me to believe it was av related. I see you use the av component .. can you tell me the names displayed in update that are associated with av? I'll ask about the file specifically when next I access my machine.
Thanks again.

Simon, great information .. and, thank you for sharing it.
I'd like to suggest that your post should be added as a locked, informational sticky, to this v5 forum.
edit: You might also consider adding the link for v4 to the post.
edit: The update I was preventing from downloading (mentioned in a prior post to this thread) either WAS, or was an update to, the "Malware Detective" tool. I've allowed it to be downloaded/updated.

hi
little confused yet
SD Now will have 2 istalation packages..right?
one of the packages will give us "standard"sd(without AV plugin without siteguard, without mail guard) the second package will give "upgraded"version(with mail guard, siteguard and AV PLugin?is it?
so my question is:
in future versions,if i want to use mailguard ,siteguard and others guard tools i must have to use PCTAV? is it?i like my antivirus program and i want to use all the presents and all the future tools and i want to have the right to choose my AV program
thank you for any help with this

i was under the impression that site and mail guard would be installed as addons which would work for any version. anyway if you have av installed there is a check box in options to disable it.
also wouldn't site guard be better as a stand alone browser plugin like mcafee site adviser
