Default PCTAV improvements

Hi All
- especially Anthony Chen & Simon Clausen

You have said that the developers are working on an improved version due in February so I've listed some of the things that 'Solcroft' may be referring to as "multiple bugs in the program, none of them critical, yet annoying all the same" just in case they gone unnoticed.

1/. Too easy to close program and stop protection.

So if PCTAVSVC.EXE is the scanning engine, what's it doing if its not stopping viruses?

Pete
Maybe at least one or two confronting warning dialogs could be added after the 'exit' is clicked so that it was clear that there was no protection if the tray icon was closed.

2/. In the Status page, "OnGuard Protection is LIMITED" is a bit underwhelming and implies that something is not right, when it is in fact the default setting. Better to say "ON" but with extra little red/green dots for the internet and incoming/outgoing email guards.

3/. It would be useful to be able to find out what the latest edition of virus definition files and the program itself, either from within the program or at least by accessing a page on the PC Tools website.

That's all folks! (for now)

Pete

Appreciate the feedback PC-Pete.

I have passed this information to the developers for further consideration.

Default Further suggestions....

Hi

1/.
In the OnGuard interface, if you switch File Guard OFF, PCTAV reacts like it's no big deal. But it should be! If AV security is important then it should at least try to strongly disuade you from indefinitely turning off basic protection.
It would also be helpful to alter the tray icon image switching to change to grey whenever File Guard is OFF

2/.
If you turn off all the Guards, the "Activate OnGuard" becomes unchecked and the Status page changes to "OnGuard Protection is OFF".
Now, if you re-check the "Activate OnGuard" check box, the Status changes to "OnGuard Protection is LIMITED".....very limited indeed because all the Guards are actually still off. The File Guard should be re-activated by default when the "Activate OnGuard" box is re-checked.

Thumbs up "Standalone service" - Great!!

From AChen "PC Tools AntiVirus version 3.6.0.34 released" sticky
Quote:
Standalone service
PC Tools AntiVirus 3.6. incorporates the enhanced functionality of a standalone service which allows the service to continue running even when the client itself is absent or closed. This means that while the OnGuard feature is turned on, PC Tools AntiVirus will continue to monitor your system even when the PC Tools AntiVirus client is closed. The service will automatically detect and quarantine infected or suspicious items. In addition, the standalone service is also able to carry out scheduled scans without the PC Tools AntiVirus client.
A very welcome feature, thanks.
