Default Downloads Hang Randomly (WXP-Pro)

I am having a problem where downloads using internet explorer will freeze randomly anwhere from 1% to 99%. This makes downloading files of any size a _serious_ hassle as I have to babysit the download dialog box and continue redownloading over and over and over. Does anyone know anything that may be causing this. I am really fed up with it. As I write this I am trying to download a file which is only ~30mb and it has frozen 4 times already: once at 2%, once at 50% and twice at around 30%! Every time I have to restart all over again! Thanks.

ok now i'm on the 10th+ time trying to download this file! This is REDICULOUS! It got to about 93% then froze and then the next time it froze on about 3%! There appears to be no rhyme or reason to this behavior! Please help if you know anything. I have been dealing with this for months. It has to be something with my LAN because it will freeze no matter what webserver I am downloading from. BTW I forgot to mention that I am using a Linksys wireless router with a linksys wireless card in a desktop machine. My link quality is 100% and signal strength fluctuates between 80 and 100%. I doubt this has any effect but I have an athlon 2600+ w/ 512mb ram on an asus a7v8x motherboard. Thanks for any replies in advance!

Do you use firewall? If so, check firewall log. I have had problems with some firewalls. They sometimes block tcp/ip packets for valid connections, because of some unknows reason.

Other reasons could be too massive temporary file cache. You could try to delete temporary internet files and possible adjust cache size.

Of course check for viruses, spyware and hijackers. They cause all kind of problems.

Final suggestion could be problems on your internet connection. There could be problems on your side or ISP's side.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked firewall settings through winXP but I need to check the router's log. I'm sure its not cache size, virus,or spyware as I have had these problems on fresh installs on windows. Also other computers on my LAN have the same problem. This makes me think it is either my LAN or my ISP. I doubt its my ISP and I can find out by simply bypassing the router and going straight through the cable modem (which I think I have done in the past and this has worked) It must be something with the way my LAN is set up. I thought it might be an Ip conflict but all computers on my network have a unique ip (192.198.1.100, 192.198.1.101, etc). Thanks for the tips though. I am going to attempt using mozilla and see if for some reason this helps. I really hope it is something to do with IE!

edit: well, it has nothing to do with the browser. Downloads hang in mozilla just like they do in IE. DOH!
Edited by drewslater on 08/23/03 08:07.

I do not know the fix but perhaps a workaround will help.

Try using a download manager such as WinGet
Download Manager as they provide the ability to resume.

Do set the options to only download one at a time so as not to get banned from the download site.

The site does not state which OS's are supported though. I use it on Win98FE with good results.

There are many free download managers available out there.

May I also suggest a program "GetRight" to resume your downloading problems.
