Default www.* IE problem (WXP-Home)

First time I see this one:

When I type www.microsoft.com (any host on the internet) it gives me a DNS error and a host not found page. But when I type http://www.microsoft.com (same thing for any site on the internet) it goes there no problem.
I have reset all IE settings to defaults and reapplied IE 6 SP1. Also deleted cookies and temp internet files. Also, all hosts PING OK from the DOS window so DNS is not an issue. It is driving me bananas as I have to type bloddy HTTP:// in front every time.

Well my fix didn't last long as another host file takes the renamed one's place!!!!But there is a work around located here:

So far so good with this fix!!
