Default adult pop ups/changing links (W98)

occasionally, my computer will generate a new window that is a [censored] site. it looks like a seperate web page with the search bar, forward buttons etc. also, if i click on a link, sometimes it goes to a [censored] site. after i close that page, if i click the link again, it goes through fine. also, if that's not enough, if the pop up occurs as i'm reading an email (newsletter), all of the normal links are changed to adult links. lastxdoor is one of the ones that happens most. is there any way to stop this? anything that i can download to get rid of this nuisance? thanks in advance! mark campbell

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.safer-networking.org/>Spybot S&D</a> is very good at this sort of thing.

After installing it make sure you have the latest update.

Others would recommend HijackThis but it only shows what you are looking at and if you don't know what you are looking at then you will not know what to do whareas Spybot will terminate it for you.

The reason "others" often recommend Hijack This, is that a Hijack This log will bring to light spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, LSP hijacks, and what have you not detected by SpyBot S&D or Ad-Aware.

Running SB is an excellent first step, though.

However, if no joy, do the following:

Go to <a target="_blank" href=http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/>http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/</a> , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.

Most of what it lists will indeed be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.
