Default explorer vs iexplorer vs explorer.exe (W98)

Recently i got a pretty functional old pent II computer from a friend. However, there is somethng weird about the computer.

When I run explorer, it came out as Internet explorer instead of explorer which gives me all the drives. In other words, If I want to browse my drives, I have to tye d: on address bar, I won't be able to see c, d, e, drives at the same time. It came out as my default yahoo.com homepage.

However, if I type in explorer.exe, it works like it should be.

Why explorer.exe works, but not explorer

I know some of you may think of reinstalling the windows. I want to save the trouble. May be there is a shorter way to fix this problem?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

No, let me just rephrase the question.

When i do start - run - and type in explorer
I will get Internet explorer instead.

but if i do start - run - and type in explorer.exe, then I get the regular explorer.

The other computers I use is that I can just simply type explorer.

Somehow the alias "explorer" is pointing to the internet explorer rather than explorer.exe....

Still a mystery to me.

Of course, I can put a short cut there on the desktop and that is not a problem.

Question is not to get around the problem. Question is to how to fix this mystery....
