Default Modem Disconnects when I try to open certain pages (WXP-Pro)

I am running IE 6.02etc. with SP1 and several Q patches installed, WXP Pro with SP1 and automatic update running, I use MSN Messenger 5.0. I don't have high speed because I live in the country. When I open specific websites or use a link to pages such as Hotmail, MSN, Windows Update etc..) my connection closes almost instantly. I can browse other pages with no problems. Also when Outlook Express tries to download hotmail or Messenger brings up the unread messages I get the disconnect too. Any ideas?

Howdy, rolfy!
Welcome to WinGuides!

Is this a new setup? Did you recently install MSN 8, a popoup blocker, or anything else? If you have a popup blocker try disabling it.

You also might try uninstalling & reinstalling your modem & update the drivers.

This machine has been running almost flawlessly for 6 months. I haven’t installed anything recently. I don't use a MSN browser just IE 6 and I don't have a popup killer. Have done the uninstall, reinstall thing even got rid of my MSN messenger and tried it without, no success. I have my machine stripped down to just the OS and it still happens. The thing that I find most strange is that it only happens on Hotmail when you open the page in IE, or when Msn Messenger tries to open the page, and when you try to use Windows update and it starts to scan the system. I have Norton 2002 and that is always upto date, and it doesn't appear to have any "extra" programs running in the backround.

I would try:
> updating modem drivers.
> Check the settings for the modem to make sure any "Disconnect if idle" or any other disconnect commands aren't check.
> Disable Norton & try it.
> In OE make sure "Disconnect after sending/recieving" isn't checked.
> Disable XP's "Automatic Updates" feature.

Have you tried reseating the modem in it's slot?

Sometimes it's neccessary to boot into safe mode & uninstall to make sure everything gets removed. Is the modem installed more than once?

I hope something here helps ya out.
