Win98 OS, PII-350, 8MB ATI Video - Changed display settings from 800X600 32bit to 1024X768 16bit. Settings were changed without restarting computer and appeared to change correctly. Then selected advanced tab to change to large font size. After selecting, required computer restart. When display screen came back up had no icons, taskbar or anything, only the default colored screen. Same results when booted in to SAFE MODE. When CNTRL/ALT/DEL pressed, close screen comes up with no programs in view window.Tried bypassing startup files and some other commands in step by step confirmation with same results.Restoring registry to a previously stored good backup had same results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Change in display settings caused blank screen! (W98)
look like you have changed to a resolution which your monitor does not support. not quite sure how to change it back by editing the registry or the ini files if the settings is there. But what I normally do is reboot the PC and imagine that u can see the screen, when u dont see the hard disk light blinking anymore right click on your mouse and hit the up arrow key and press enter. that should bring up the property dialogue box. then press Alt-tab and press the right arrow key five times, now u should be at the settings tab. then press tab twice to go down to the settings of resolution and press the left arrow key once to move to 800 X 600 resolution. then press tab five times to go to Apply and press enter. then press enter twice. u should be back at your original resolution again.

Blimey dude did you work that one out? That was what I would have suggested if i were here earlier. But i had to work. Oh the life of a technician is a stressful busy one!
Tell your users 90% of all computer problems can be fixed with a simple re-boot... Or just a large boot.
