I'm having a problem with McAffee's QuickClean (it performs an illegal operation when it attempts to "clean cookies" and shuts down). Tech support told me to uninstall the program, and then reinstall in safe mode.
Since i trust more people here than i do most tech support, does this make sense and seem ok to do?
Thanks.

Re: Install new application in Safe Mode??
I would say not....
Pull up your Boots.....
Are you sure they were not on some good drugs cause...
When you use safe mode windows doesn't even use the files that you normally start up with. It makes it own files up..... it is a long story on how the registry works... combined with some .INI .sys .bat files
but you never install program in safe mode......
you could end up with allot of conflicts because the normal stuff that is starting up and reserving spots is not enabled so if you install something then boot normal there could be conflicts
and it the programs writes anything that is needed when you boot up normal it is gone.....
and yes for you picky people some parts of the registry are common to both but for general purpose just thing of it as the computer next door...
just think of it as a totally different computer when you boot in safe mode computer so if you install it in safe mode your neighbor will love you for the new program....
next question do you use a logon srceen or are you the only user with no logon screen.....
Thanks
Mac!!!

Re: Install new application in Safe Mode??
Installing from Safe Mode is an option. And a good one which is recommended when you are having problems. Less is loaded and therefore, there is less to interfere. See if it works in this case. I did install Mcafee AV in Safe Mode last year when Windows wouldn't cooperate. It did it. I have since switched to another AV.

Re: Install new application in Safe Mode??
Coolsights,
I'm the only user.
It's not McAffee Anti-Virus that i'm using, it's McAffee Quick Clean which does things like clean up shortcuts that no longer lead to anything, cleans the registry, cookies, etc.
Hmmm, not really sure what to do at this point!

Re: Install new application in Safe Mode??
I only used Mcafee AV as an example. You can and should install in safe Mode if there is a problem installing in Windows. That's the general troubleshooter.

Re: Install new application in Safe Mode??
You can try a couple of things. Copy the CD to the Hard Drive and try the installation from there in Windows. If that doesn't work, try the install from the hard drive from Safe Mode.
I can use my CD Drives in Safe Mode. Here's how:
I never removed the Config.sys and autoexec.bat. Config.sys points to the generic CD driver on my hard drive. Autoexec.bat still has the line to load Mscdex, but it is remarked out as it should be. Before I reboot, I go to msconfig and unremark the line so that Mscdex is loaded. I then boot to the command prompt to let the CD Drives be loaded. I then type this at the C:\>
win /d:m
That starts Safe Mode. In My Computer you'll find the Drives. Autorun won't work. But if you ever need to use SFC and can only boot to Safe Mode Remember this. It may save you. unless you know how to extract from DOS. Many people don't and would prefer to use SFC. Also, Here's a link to a long and complicated method to do this. Remember it all boils down to loading your CD Drivers and Mscdex in Dos and then switching to Safe Mode. Before you reboot after using Safe mode, remember to go back to autoexec.bat and put the REM back in front of the line which loads MSCDEX or you'll be in compatibility mode in Windows. Not a good thing.
Reboot the machine. Do not go directly from Safe Mode into windows/ Again, you do not want to have mscdex loaded.
Here's that link:

Re: Install new application in Safe Mode??
BELIEVE ME YOU DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL ANYTHING IN SAFE MODE
Windows renames the Autoexec.bat Config.sys Win.ini and System.ini and Hide allot of keys in the registry.... when you boot into safe mode
My moto is if it will not load with my anti-virus running and on my default desktop The program has a problem and needs to be fixed.....
For one that is tech supports job to give you a B.S. line. I would hound them till they fix it... tell them that you do not install software in safe mode and if they say yes then explain to them that when you use safe mode the normal files are not used... and if the install program adds lines to these files in the safe mode the files are no longer used when you boot into normal mode. I have had to fight with tech support before just call them two or three times a day and ask for a supervisor if they give you a line ask for their supervisor... I had to do that with my ISP services.. believe they get tired of you calling ever day... even got a free ROM once for a motherboard that way.... You have to call there bluf...
The reason I asked you about a logon screen is because if you where using a logon screen I was going to have you load it on the default desktop by pressing cancel button but you are on the default desktop by not using a password and a logon screen
You can always try to clean up the hard drive by hand then see if the program will run right I have some links on this page at the bootom on how to clean cookies and IE temp files

Thanks

Re: Install new application in Safe Mode??
Just to offer more confusion with another viewpoint.
If the program is going to be that much trouble, just dump it altogether.
There are better methods/programs available to clean cookies/shortcuts/registry etc.
It seems you are faced with two opposite opinions (three if you include mine).
Good luck whichever way you go.
This advice is free.
You might only get what you paid for.
