View Full Version : reassociating .zip and .cab

I just opened a .cab file for the first time since my last reinstall and Powerdesk popped up with a prompt "would you like to associate compressed file types with Powerdesk" or something to that effect. I accidently gave it permission, and of course Powerdesk doesn't provide an option to switch back.
I remember that .zip and .cab were asssociated with Microsoft compressed folders. How do I reassociate them? Is compressed folders an executable file? If so, what is the path to it?
This is a time critical question. I have a system restore point from last night that I can go back to, but I want to avoid that if possible. That restore point will be too outdated for me to use it in another day or so.

In Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, then to the File Types tab. In this window you can change the associations, in the bottom half of the window that has Details for '[censored]' extension there is a button for Change. Just be careful.

Sorry, I forgot I wasn't in the Windows XP forum. In Windows 9x and Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types and choose the one in the list you want to change.
You can also click once on a file name, hold down the shift key and right-click the file. In the menu should be seen Open With. Choose Open With and it will bring up a smaller window with the same choices. Select the one you want and to make it permanent, put a check mark in the Always use this program to open this type of file.

Winzip does that too. If you want to use Winzip to view cabs, open it in classic view and go to Options>configuration>system Tab>Associations Button
To regain the Cab association here's an article. You need to open the registry and make a change or two

yeah. I need to know what to point it to. What filename do I choose to associate them with compressed folders. It's not in the open with box, so I need a full path to it too.

There is a manual way to do it, but the quickest is to re-install WinZip if you have it. It should prompt you to re-associate .zip, .cab, and others.

I don't have winzip. I want to point zip and cab to compressed folders. How do I do this?

I must be missing just exactly what you want to do.
File associations are used to cause a file to be opened with a particular program, i.e. WinZip (or PKWare or ZipMagic or TurboZip) when installed will open all .zip files and usually will allow you to view the contents of .cab files, .doc files are associated with Word or WordPad, .wpd files are associated with WordPerfect, .sam/.lwp files are associated with Lotus AmiPro/WordPro, .xls with Excel, .ppt with PowerPoint, etc.

I've fixed zip. I deleted it from the registered file types, uninstalled compressed folders and reinstalled it. So half the problem is done with. Now, any idea how Me handles .cab files by default? Compressed folders wouldn't do it, but I could always read them before with Windows explorer. And before anyone suggests associating them with explorer, that only leads it to try downloading it for some reason.

Okay on the .zip. As I recall, Win9x/ME/NT Explorer didn't have to dig into the .cab files, it was left up to the extract command to do it when a particular file was needed. That was part of why I bought WinZip.

Ok sorry Mosaic, I just noticed your link. That worked for .cab. Both halves of the problem are fixed now. Thank ya very much.
By the way, what does enthusiast mean under your user name?
