View Full Version : Modems don't work after logoff

I've got an internal modem, an external modem and a USB ISDN modem. They're all behaving oddly, with the same symptoms for all of them. Here's what happens:
I install the modem. All works well and I can use it to connect to the net all day. Then when I power the PC off, next time I try to use the modem, it dials, connects, and then gives me a 629 DUN error message. I have to uninstall and reinstall in order to use the modem again. I'm running Win98SE...and I'm no expert at DUN/registry stuff etc.
Any help gratefully received - and probably more useful than the 3 hours I paid a consultant for yesterday - with no fix!
Thanks in advance,
AS

Since it happens with 3 different modems, it sounds more like a DUN issue than a modem issue. I would just go into Add/Remove Programs, to uninstall, and then reinstall, DUN. Also delete any current DUN connections you might have, and remake those after reinstalling it. Of course you're going to need correct Windows Disk or Cab files to replace DUN once you take it out. Good luck.

one thing I can think of is you may have a conflict make sure you don't have the mouse conflicting with the modem or something else
the mouse used to be the biggy cause they both wanted com1

Error 629:
You have been disconnected from the computer you are dialing. The cause
for this error is random, the only thing I can recommend is to run through all of
your settings and to verify them with you ISP
Here is where I got it (http://members.tripod.com/jm_yoda/win98dun/advanced.htm)

Well, I tried installing the DUN 1.4 update, and that hasn't fixed my problem.
I also ran RegClean which caused more problems than it fixed!
Been thinking about the origins of the problem....I moved house two weeks ago and bought the external modem to use whilst I was waiting for my ISDN phone lines to be installed (as I'd always had ISDN at my previous house and the internal modem had never worked before).
Prior to moving house I'd used a ISDN USB external modem. The problem arrived (I think) with the introduction of this external 56K modem - a Diamond Supra Express 56ePRO. And it now affects any modem I use.
I've uninstalled the extermal modem but the problem still continues. Not sure if all of that helps anyone work out how to fix my problem, but it seemed like a good idea to write down all the facts!
Thanks for suggestions so far - please keep em coming....

you might want to go into the device manager and see what is left in there you might have more than one modem listed I would delete them all
when you open the control panel click on system then when the window opens click on device manager look under modems make sure there is only one listed also you might look around to see if there is anything hanging around that you don;'t have any more when it rebuilds the drivers you have to make your connectoid again I would delete the connectiod to open my computer on the desk top get in the dial up networks folder delete the connectiod then delete the modems in the device manager reinstalled the dun also did you uninstall the other drivers you had from the connections at your other house for the ISDN just need a good house cleaning here is there any thing in the device manager that relates back to the ISDN
also in the add remove programs is there a uninstall for the ISDN stuff
just wish I was there to look around if you clean house maybe it will help you cn take all modems out while you clean house after the house is cleaned put the modem back in also have you removed the card for the ISDN
Thanks

629 is not a hardware error, its software. Here's a Microsoft KB listing many possible solutions. Error 629 is one of the most misleading, difficult errors to fix. Good Luck.
