Hi!
I have troubles with the Shell Icons key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\explorer\Shell Icons. Mine has only one entry - "29" created by Tweak UI for shortcuts.
I did some search in this forum and somewhere else too and found out that through this key you can change many important icons. I would like to change icons in my Start Menu, so I looked up the respective values (plus some other ones - e.g. default application, etc.), added them to the Shell Icon key (in the form the tweaks suggest) and restarted the system. Nothing happened - the system ignored the changes.
Then I found out that I should delete the ShellIconCache file in C:\Windows. So I deleted it, restarted the PC and again nothing. (Apart from the fact that instead of 700kb, the ShellIconCache is now 1508Mb.)
Windows just keep ignoring any changes I make in the ShellIcon key! Why? What else do I have to do?
I use Windows 98 (not SE), I.E 5.5
Thanks,
Michael

P.S. I didn't dare to touch the "29" value.

You'll find many recent posts regarding this.

How many icons do you have on your desktop?

Minimum: My computer, Neighourhood, Internet Explorer, Outlook, Word, Recycle Bin, My documents and that's it.

I found a possible solution - haven't tried it yet but it might work. Edit the registry key, make whatever changes I want, RUN TWEAK UI, change the overlay icn for shortcuts and restart the PC. Either it won't work or TWEAK UI will do the job for me.

Thanks anyways reghakr! (For this and other posts)

Thruthfully, I don't like that icon overlay hack as it's caused problems in the past. I'd leave the arrow.

Could that be your problem?

.....1508Mb.....

Is this a typing error? If that is the true value, then somethings fishy..

To have the changes take effect you have to do this. Go to the desktop and right click, Choose Properties.
Effects tab. Choose Large icons. Let them redraw.
Deselect large icons. They will redraw and the changes you made in the registry will take effect.

If you have the new TweakUI, the remove arrrow function is fine. It uses the updated method to remove the arrow overlay. (substituting a blank icon for the arrow icon ) And you do. The 29 entry is the new method It points to a blank icon .

The old TWEAKUI, it had side effects. The older version changed the IsShortcut value in the pifiles and lnkfile subkeys. This created two side effects. Keyboard Shortcuts assigned to various programs stopped working, and there were double context menu entries for shortcuts.
